18 Features (EDIT: A stolen meme)

Wed Oct 7, 2009, 11:09 AM
  • Mood: Neutral
  • Listening to: Marbles II - Marillion
  • Reading: Good Omens - Pratchett & Gaiman
EDIT: Also, I've decided to steal this meme from :icontheillastrator:.

ASK MY OCS QUESTIONS! I'll answer it in the form of a meme. You can ask any of my characters a question about anything and I'll draw them answering it.

__
I haven't forgotten about the ten free sketches, don't worry. (:

I'll try not to babble too much in these, but I am used to doing lengthy critiques. XD

Nicked from :icontainted-aura: and :iconanomalias:

Be one of the first 18 people commenting on this journal entry, and I will add you to the Featured List!

For each of the 18 first people answering this journal I will put his/her avatar and the three deviations I like most from his/her gallery on the list.

If you answer, you'll have to do the same in your journal, putting me on the first place, completing the list with 17 other people. The idea of this is not to get a free feature, it is to spread art around for everyone.

1. :icontainted-aura: - Quillish, dear Quillish, how doth I love thee.

~ Seraphine Skies - Of course I'm using her example of my girl Seraphina. This piece was a surprise reworking of this. I wasn't expecting it, which made it all the more lovely. I can just feel the emotion that was put into it, and it possesses such skill that it is easily one of my favourite pieces of her. (:

~ Best Friends - I don't know much about the story behind this, but I do recognize how important of a commission it was. The scenery in this is gorgeous, and I love the way Quil executed the movement of light. I also have respect for how much painstaking work she put into that tree. xD Shimo and Thomas look so casual and at peace.

~ The Final - Oh man, look at that sexy Kio action. Quil claims that this background is nothing special, but I think it's awesome. I've always admired the intensity that Quil is able to put into her drawings' eyes -- they're always able to be very expressive, which is a great skill to have. The pink in Kio's eyes are just so vibrant. It's also a very dynamic pose, and combined with how the skin is painted it makes for a beautiful piece.

2. :iconanomalias: - Anom, we should write a book. We'll call it 'A List of Things I Want To Do To Gorgeous Naked Men'.

~ X-Men OC - Ava is the adorably spunky mutant OC for Anom's XMen universe. I love everything about her design from her physical appearance to her disposition. The way that Anom lined this shows good understanding of how the body works. You know, I've never asked if she's taken art courses.

~ Vinicio - The Italian Stallion Anom-style. (; I remember her not being too sure of her men at this point, but because I'm a bully I requested him anyway, and look how great it is! What I love most about this is the pose; she definitely was able to incorporate an attitude that totally is Vin. I may be biased, but this is still fantastic from an artistic point of view, too. Again, great knowledge of the human body. It's simple, but the little delicacies and details are what make it so successful.

~ Ametrine - This set of commissions was open only to requests that interested her. It was a good idea; I can really see how much she enjoyed doing this piece and I feel like she put a lot of herself into it. (: The colour scheme is superb, as well as the colouring. I love how Anom uses Flash in ways that I could never. XD

3. :iconminomotu: - One of my watchers. I don't know much about them, but looking through their gallery I see some wonderful things - especially in the ways of fanart and traditional art!

~ Project: Happy_Lilium - I like the use of the lineless style in this deviation. The character is very well designed, especially in terms of the outfit. It's a very cool pose, but what I like most about this is the selection of colours. Minomotu is careful to repeat the same red throughout the piece which pulls it all together very nicely. It stands out against the black and purple of the character.

~ D.Gray-man keychains - Excellent bit of fanart. I haven't finished it, but DGM is a good series. (: Minomotu's colouring is, again, great in these. I also like the style in which the chibis are drawn-- I personally have a hugely difficult time getting chibi proportions to look right. They're very cute.

~ Inner Demon - Another great piece of traditional fanart. This one really strikes me because I loved Yu Yu Hakusho back when Adult Swim's lineup didn't blow. It also caught my eye because of Kurama's red hair. The way the shading in it was executed is very well done. The contrast in poses and expression between Kurama and Yoko Kurama is also a nice touch.

4. :iconpandapenguin: - Another watcher who I've been lucky enough to do a collab with. (: Her gallery is just filled with some excellent linework; I'd really love to see some more examples of her colouring!

~ To the Moon and Back - This is a good bit of anatomy work. I really like the girl's body, specifically her lower back and hand. As the viewer you really get a sense of her leaning into the male. It's very intimate without being the least bit risqué. That being said, the colours are also great and vibrant. I like the effect of the night sky.

~ 5 Years on DA - This is compositionally very neat. Again, I like the colouring style and the representation of (I think is) herself is very cute! Overall a gorgeous bit of work. The group shot gives it a lot of character.

~ Hot Egyptian Days - This seems to me to be very out of the ordinary in Pandapenguin's gallery, which makes it very nice to look at. (: I like the arch of the back - the pose makes it all very dynamic and complete.

5. :iconcash-chan: - A dear old Gaia friend, my dear Cash is a fantastic artist. I'm always impressed in the growth she can show from even two consecutive pictures.

~ Ambience: Always Remembered - The thing that catches my attention in this piece is the great use of the PS brush. But beyond that is fantastic colouring and mastery of anatomy. (: I think that the title of this is very appropriate, as the whole thing clearly has an ambience about it -- bittersweet is the feeling I get. Cash is always very good about doing that sort of thing.

~ ... give yourself to me. - Wonderful fanart of Seimei from Loveless -- Cash's favourite series? XD In any case I know she loves this story and these characters, and she draws them so excellently (you should all check out her nude Soubi). The mood in this is perfect. I love the choice of colours very much.

~ A Proposal - More shameless plugging of my characters, but again, this one has legitimacy behind it too. xD Again, Cash's colouring is excellent; I love it so much. I like the contrast of the red in Katsu and the purple in June, bridged by the yellow of the flower. Expressions are also really personable. Cash is great with expressions.

6. :iconhonestxmistake17: - Kayl is such a sweetheart. I'm glad to know her. (: She's a skilled photographer but also a very talented artist -- I wish her gallery had more traditional art to look at because I love it so much.

~ Longing To Fly - Thought I'd start with one of my favourite traditional pieces of hers. She shows a great understanding of anatomy in it, and I love the effect of the shading that the mermaid has. Coupled with the title, it's a a very effective deviation.

~ Empty Home - Like I said, Kayl is a very skilled photographer. She has a knack for getting great and expressive shots. I feel that the black and white of this makes it, overall, very successful. There's also some nice framework going on in it and some good compositional aspects.

~ Rainbow. - This isn't me being a creep, I swear. xD It's such a simple presentation, but at the same time very emotional and intimate. I love the way the colours are just slightly desaturated -- a subdued rainbow is a thought-provoking concept. The angle is also very nice.

7. :iconpadfeets: - Eek, Paddy, one of my very best friends. (: She puts up with my absurdity and is a good sport about it. Not only is she a great anime artist, but also a likewise realist.

~ Greetings From Russia - This is largely an inside joke in concept, but also a great piece of art. xD Firin came out particularly well in this, and I definitely see improvement in Padfiddles' colouring technique between this and her more recent deviations. She shows a good understanding of weight shift and body structure. It's an adorable and well-executed piece. xD Poor little Italian.

~ Come With Me - A beautiful piece of fanart referencing a beautiful musical. My absolute favourite part of this is how airy and gentle Lily looks. She's very lovely. I also like the contrast of her purity versus the darkness of Snape. All in all it's very lovely; the use of the background was a good call and gives it a nice nostalgic (?) effect.

~ Because She's Russian - Though Padfeets knows her way around the digital world, I think that she's strongest with traditional art. It's certainly easier to see how much of herself that she puts into it, and I love that in art. The way she uses coloured pencils is really kind of formidable. xD I wish I had that kind of traditional skill, as layering coloured pencils can be very complicated.

8. :iconzunatious18: - One of my very good friends, Zu has an amazing talent with traditional media -- I especially adore his marker work. Zu has always been excellent with proportion and body shape -- I've seen his work evolve from being clearly influenced by Saiyuki to something entirely his own. I could spot his style a mile away. (:

~ Dark - This is actually his most recent deviation but I just had to post it anyway for all of the intricacies of the background. The analogous colour scheme works so well with it. I don't know if this was the intention, but it makes me think of a field of wheat or something organic and golden behind him.

~ Bathroom Suicide - And this is only the beginnings of his MSPaint work. The fisheye perspective on this is amazing. That's really all I have to say. It conveys a very helpless and unstable feeling.

~ Top of the WORLD - To me this proves his versatility hands-down. I love the surrealism in it. You're batshit, man, but I love you anyway. <3

9. :iconhermionesclass101: - A watcher that I am very grateful for having. She always has a nice comment to spare for me. (:

~ rain - I love to see what people do for the Themes Challenge -- I wish I had the patience to do it myself. In any case, this one is particularly cute; an exchange between her two OCs (I'm assuming?). I'm not too experienced with critiquing writing aside from some side-beta reading, but as far as I can tell, she's got a great writing style. It's very understandable, and descriptive without being overly so.

~ night - Another theme challenge. I love the repetitiveness of the phrase. Again, very great writing style. She definitely got the feelings projected to the reader very well.

~ MEMETASTIC - I had no idea that you could do these things with writing but the more I think about it, why not? This is very cute, and a good look into her personality. (: I had a lot of fun reading it.

10. :icontheillastrator: - Oh lord, this is going to be hard, picking just three out of Illa's gallery. In any case, another dear friend from my real life. She's hilarious and the only one on DA who can share stage crew jokes with me. MARIAAAAA. Illa is a comic artist primarily, and is just the absolute best at panelling and hashing out sequences.

~ Spontaneous Gift Art - Hit me with rotten fruit, this is obligatory art-for-me time. XD This was such a nice surprise -- just completely out of the blue Illa drew my boys. And even included Goulash! Like Zu, Illa's style is so distinct; I love how she's made cartooning her own thing. Seeing Illa-ified Vin was hilarious. Her expressions are perfect.

~ Profile: Tekk - Just because Tekk is probably the best OC ever in the history of anything. What I like most about Illa is that she doesn't hesitate for a second in giving her characters flaws -- Tekk, for example, is an asshole. He's scruffy and fat. Plus, look at the size of his eyebrows. When's the last time you had a fat, scruffy, substitute teacher dick OC? She's told me before that Tekk was purposefully created to be an Anti-Sue. And for that I love her.

~ DUMB - Bask in the glory that is Illa's OC, Tanken. He's the part-two of the Tekk and Tanken duo. (: He's also really adorably stupid and gullible. Again, I love the sequencing. You rock at this, and pretty much everything else. Even the night scene is convincing. I wish I could find a good enough example of how you do ridiculous expressions because that's really my favourite part of your art. XD

11. :iconfuyumitsukai: Dear Fuu, a good friend and talented writer. I'm lucky enough to have an OC related to one of her OCs (and all of the mayhem that occurs within and without). If I could I would give her more free time to submit more deviations.

~ Design - This is June, Fuyu's OC (and Katsu's artistic twin). What I love most about this is how candid it is, though of course I'm always a fan of the "genre" ilk. Her outfit is well-designed, and I like how it shows how creative June is. There's a great use of texture in it.

~ My Incubus - I'm going to go ahead and pimp Fuyu's webcomic, My Incubus. The storytelling is great. Again, I wish she had a bit more time to work on it because I'm anxious to see what happens next. :3 You should check it out.

~ Price - I could be wrong, but I think this was AP work? I'm of the opinion that it's very important for an artist to be versatile and to try new things. Not that this piece is Fuyu 'trying new things' but feet are a complicated part of the anatomy and I commend her for not running screaming from the room at the very thought of it. The execution of this is beautiful. There's an intensity in it that's conveyed through the extreme contrast in value, and the pencil laydown is very consistent and smooth. I really love this one for its technical ability. (:

12. :iconstarrsilver: - Some jerk who has sexcellent taste in books and is schooled well in frivolity. We're starting up a greeting card business when our art careers leave us with no other option aside from prostitution. I'm going to stay away from any of the writing for now because I am a lowly visual artist and your writing ability intimidates me.

~ Fiona Blythe - I need to familiarize myself with your characters because what I've seen is so much fun (so many funs). I really like the colouring job you did with her, but what stands out most to me is the colour scheme. The red-orangeyellow-green works so nicely together and I'm a fan of the way you draw eyes. You've developed a style into your own rather than some generic animoo face. I feel like now that I know you for it, I could pick something you've drawn out as yours.

~ Not Listening - Baha, snarkies. I love the attitude of this guy. This deviation shows a great sense of the human body -- not to mention hands are freaking hard to draw. I commend you. I also really like the lighter and flame. But really, it's the attitude. The dialogue made me lol. He should have a playdate with Katsu and they can spend all afternoon not caring about things.

~ 99.Solitude - BAAAACCKKGROUUUUUUNNNDDD. This yo' limey bloke's flat, yeah? The use of texture in this is super and just the attention to detail in all of the appliances and supplies is fantastic. He needs to hire a maid. I'm not going to lie, also, I love Damien's hair style. It's so fluffy and cute. Er, I mean, manly. Yes, manly.

:iconkudohmiyuki:
Note me the details and I'll be happy to look into it. I can't guarantee anything, unfortunately, because of schoolwork and a list of other arts, but barring any sort of catastrophe I'm sure I can get it done within that timeframe.
